UPDATE: Recovered body from Red River identified

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - The man who ran from Fargo Police and jumped into the Red River Monday afternoon has been identified as 32-year-old Garrett Byrd of Fargo, N.D.

Authorities surrounded a large portion of the river in the metro most of Monday and into Tuesday morning for a search and possible water rescue. Valley Water Rescue and Fargo Fire were called in to help find the man.

Fargo Police say the original incident began around 2:35 p.m. Monday, when the got a report of a disturbance at 9 Lower Terrance North in Fargo. They say when officers arrived, they tried to interview a man involved.

However, he ran from officers and jumped into the river in the area of 100 3rd St. N. in Moorhead. Fargo Police identified the female victim from the altercation and recently took a statement from her.

Byrd’s body was discovered in the Red River on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office says they not find any evidence of significant trauma. A toxicology report is still pending.

Authorities say a final disposition of death will not be available until the final autopsy report is completed.
